  1. Activity 5: Space: Combining Multiple Views

  3. Purpose:
  4. To incorporate multiple spatial representations in a composition.
  5.  
  6. Materials:
  7. Drawing materials, paper, and tracing paper.
  8.  
  9. Method:
  10. C√©zanne and the Cubists often combined several viewpoints of a plastic image in one painting. The juxtaposition of multiple views in a single painting implies movement of the observer around the objects.

Select a single object to use as a model for this problem. On three separate pieces of tracing paper, draw the top (or plane view), the elevation view, and a section view of the same object to the same scale. Place these drawings one on top of another and in a single work combine the most characteristic parts of each view. Add value differences for contrast, variety, and enhancement of spatial position. (Fig. 8.5A; also see figures 8.47 and 8.48 in your textbook)
